FSEA judges entries from all over the world on design, execution and level of difficulty. The categories spotlighted in this contest are: foil stamping, embossing, specialty effects, design, as well as categories relating to the use of green materials and the cold foil process. The News is Out: Landmark Label - Cellotape Inc. Won the Top Honors in the 2011 FTA Competition
The 39 judges of Flexographic Technical Association have decided – Landmark Label to receive 1 Gold Award and Best of Show, 1 Silver Award and 1 Bronze Award in the 2011 Excellence in Flexography competition!
After evaluating 620 print samples for their degree of difficulty and level of execution the judges have awarded the Gold Award and Best of Show to Landmark Label for the Class V Vodka label, the silver award for the River Rose Gin label and the bronze award went to California Rose Label.
The Class V Vodka label which was printed on a white matte polypropylene substrate (BOPP pour le connoisseur) is one of the film labels we are proud to showcase as its design is very complex and printing it high-quality was not a job many print shops could do! The FTA technical judges appreciated correctly the design & printing difficulty of this label – Class V Vodka had to go through 8 print stations before it became a final product. The tight registration is remarkable and here’s where our skilled pressmen had a word to say.
River Rose Gin is another film label we proudly showcase as the artwork is outstanding and the registration is excellent! River Rose Gin label was ran on one of our flexographic presses and went through 7 print stations, the last one being the gloss varnish (UV) station. The silver award winner competed with hundreds of labels in the Narrow Web Line category.
Our other entry that stood apart from the rest in the 2011 FTA printing contest is the California Rose label. This label is one of our favorite as it is printed on a specialty coated substrate named Constellation Jade Raster. This simple, yet eye-catching label was ran through 11 print stations on one of our most advanced flexographic presses. The bronze award winner in the Narrow Web Line Coated Paper category was a 4 images across and 4 around job. The California Rose label was embossed, foil stamped and varnished to enrich the elegant look of the design and accurately represent the image of the brand.
Congratulations to our customers, pressmen and to our art department team for making such a statement of exceptional packaging and flexography!
You can see our winning labels in the 2011 Excellence in Flexography magazine – the Class V Vodka label is on the cover of this highly respected flexographic source, online on www.flexography.org and of course, on our website.

Boosting our capabilities
To start with, two years ago we acquired the Mark Andy Model - XP5000 which has one of the most advanced print platforms in the industry. With 11 flexo-press print stations, 4 die stations, re-insertion capability and computer interfaces at every print & die station, our XP5000 delivers the speed, high productivity and exceptional color consistency that your labels need.
Controlled by servo motors, the XP5000 can print up to 11 colors at one time as many times as desired without losing the registration and that’s one clear advantage this system has over the others in its line.
The XP5000 faster set up and job changeover allows us to print larger lot sizes without altering the quality of the labels as it utilizes electronic register control with exclusive servo programming.
Mark Andy’s Quick Change Cassette System offers rotary screen, two hot foil print stations and cold foil capability in addition to Flexo and UV Flexo printing. Embossing is of course, something that this top notch press can do and it does it much better than other presses. The multi process capability makes the XP5000 more flexible and more efficient than other narrow web presses. Another feature of this printer that makes our work much easier and helps us deliver our labels faster is the turn-bar capability - for the non-tech-savvy people this means that we can front print our labels and back print them in the same time.
One of the responsibilities our project engineer carries is to monitor the daily press runs of the XP5000 to improve its performance and exploit its fullest potential. The latest trick that our engineerdid was to design two cylinders that allow us to insert a second substrate into the printing process. In this way we can print on two substrates/materials at one time.
Like this printer was not advanced enough, we recently upgraded our Mark Andy XP5000 equipment with a DOD (Drop on Demand) printer with two print heads. “What can this DOD do?” you’re probably wondering now…two words – variable data. With our DOD 256 Variable System printer we can print two across any type of barcode labels – QR codes, RFID, Microsoft tags; NFC (Near Field Communication) labels and/or images using different colors (i.e coupons are multi-colored) at anywhere from 0 to 500fpm.
As the system it is integrated in, the DOD delivers top notch quality labels. Each print head contains a series of complex features – all designed to deliver ink with controlled, precise results and with no fluid sweeping or air ingestion at the print nozzles.
With this new acquisition, the high-quality print on various substrates with UV- variable inkjet does not constitute a challenge anymore.
To better showcase the capability of this printing system we will tell you about one of our projects which would’ve been very difficult to be completed on the other presses we have in our shop. Annie Chun’s, one of our most valued customers and the leading producer of all-natural, gourmet Pan-Asian food in the United States came to us with a peel-off label printing request. In order to deliver the job, we used the de-lam/re-lam features of our XP5000. After we inserted the material in the printing system, we removed the liner (de-lam) and we printed the copy - an Asian dish recipe - on the adhesive. Choosing the right adhesive was not an easy task to do either – the adhesive shouldn’t have been too strong nor too weak in order to deliver a viable solution of the peel-off label. After the copy printing was done, we reapplied the liner to the substrate (re-lam) and then sent it further to the next print station where the labels went into the turn-bar in order for the face printing to be performed.
Needless to say, we delivered these labels successfully, task that contributed to the sales’ growth of Annie Chun’s products.
Besides the applications mentioned above, we can print using this state-of-the art equipment - scratchers, lottery tickets, coupons and an application we are looking forward to - serialized parking tickets.
For the green conscious people out there, we would like to bring to your attention that we can use the same water based inks we use on our other presses for all the print stations of the XP5000 system. “Green” substrates are also available at your disposal. Stay tuned because we won’t stop here!

Our “Think Green” Philosophy Has Been Revealed to the Winter Fancy Food Participants
“Landmark Label is committed to going “above and beyond” industry standards, from cleanliness to safety to environmental processes and materials. “Our goal is to set new standards wherever possible,” said Larry Ino, Landmark Label’s Director of Operations.
An example of pioneering efforts made in the area of environmental protection is the company’s sludge filtration system, which was designed and implemented in the Fremont facility in 2000. The system goes beyond purifying the production wastewater and actually turns the remaining sludge into biodegradable granules usable as landfill. Over the past several years (beginning in 2001), the Fremont facility has been awarded numerous Environmental Achievement Awards from the SGIA (Specialty Graphic Imaging Association).
Another example of “green thinking” from Landmark Label is the adoption of a fairly new technology – direct to plate printing. Our direct-to-plate technology is environmentally friendly as it eliminates or reduces the use of the hazardous materials and increases the productivity rate. More than this, Landmark Label ensures that all its activities are in compliance with the RoHs/WEEE requirements.
In addition to its transition to DTP, Landmark Label prints most of its flexographic work with water-based inks. UV inks are used for all of the screen-printing jobs. For its four-color process work, Landmark Label utilizes soy-based inks.
Landmark also offers biomaterials - Earth First® corn based films, 100% PCW FSC certified face-stock and tree-free face stock comprised of bamboo pulp, bagasse (sugar cane), and cotton linters. Better yet, the mill that produces the tree-free face stock holds three environmental certifications: Green Energy certification, ISO 14001 and Clear Water certification. ISO 14001 is as a matter of fact the next logical step that Landmark Label is taking in fulfilling its mission of delivering high quality services and products in a socially responsible manner.
The green materials that Landmark Label uses bring many benefits to the environment and to the customers as well – Landmark’s biomaterials lower the impact on the environment and in the same time they enhance the appearance of the product labels through their availability in brighter colors (soy inks), smoothness of the print surface and color purity (labels that contain the tree-free face stock are whiter than other tree-free products and create a smooth print surface).
Label manufacturers also benefit from their use – the use of soy inks makes it easier to recycle paper, improves the life span of the printers and is more economic in the long run.
Landmark’s efforts of being an environmental oriented company are boosted by the implementation of the lean manufacturing concepts throughout the facility.
You too can join environmentally conscious companies that want to make a difference. Mother Earth is counting on you. Deliver our message “Think Green” to your business partners and customers and always keep in mind that there is a better way of enhancing your brand - the green way!
